hello there :) i know this probably is a waaaaay stupid question, but how on earth can uu do clicker-training when you hold the harness in one hand, the clicker in the ohter + treats + leash + ? :)
i also wonder, how do you do about the timing? that's maybe the biggest question too... cause as far as i've understood about the clicker, you need to give a treat as fast after the clicker sound as possible?
greeetings from voiceofjoy :)
The clicker is held in the same hand as the leash and harness. I know that may seem awkward, but you gradually get used to the feeling after a wile. as far as the treats go, having them in a pouch that is worn around the waist, and on the right side, (invisible to the dog), is the best thing to do.
My grandma baught a clicker for her little miniature poodle to try and get her to listen better, but I don't think she's done anything with it. I'm not even sure she's read the little booklet that came with it lol.
(Yeah I know this is toatally off-topic, but hey...)
Getting a wrist band (or finding a clicker that comes with a wrist band) is one of the best things I've done, I actually rigged up the elastic wrist band on my clicker to wrap around my hand so that hte clicker is secured to the palm of my hand...so I can still use my fingers for holding things, and just move a finger of thumb in to click when necessary... I hope that made sense!
Yeah, it sounds awkward, but it's really not that hard to hold the clicker, harness and leash all in one hand. You just rest the clicker on the harness handle and hold it on with your thumb. Then when you need to click, you just press down. I also know of people who velcro the clicker to the handle while they are using it. It's placed within easy reach of the thumb. As for the timing, you click the instant the dog does the behavior you want. You don't have to rush the feeding. You can just go for it naturally like you would any other time. It should come within 3 to 4 seconds. The click alerts the dog that it has done what it is supposed to and it knows the food is coming. The clicker is a really great tool. My dog loves it and learns much faster with it.
